Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, often referred to as Sir M. Visvesvaraya, was one of India’s most distinguished engineers and statesmen. Born on 15th September 1861, in Muddenahalli, Karnataka, he was a man whose legacy continues to inspire generations of engineers and nation-builders across India.

Early Life and Education

Visvesvaraya came from a modest background. Despite financial hardships, he pursued education with great determination. He graduated in engineering from the prestigious College of Engineering, Pune, in 1883. His brilliance soon became evident through his innovative work and dedication.

Engineering Genius

Sir Visvesvaraya is best known for his work in irrigation and flood management. One of his most remarkable engineering feats was the design and implementation of the flood protection system for the city of Hyderabad and the construction of Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) dam in Mysore, which transformed the region's agriculture and economy.

He introduced the concept of automatic sluice gates, which was first installed at the Khadakwasla reservoir near Pune. This invention was so successful that it was later adopted in various other projects across the country.

Visionary Administrator

In addition to his engineering contributions, Sir Visvesvaraya was also a visionary administrator. He served as the Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918. During his tenure, he implemented a number of progressive reforms, including:

Establishing industries such as the Mysore Soap Factory and Sandalwood Oil Factory

Founding the Mysore University

Promoting technical education and industrial development

Improving infrastructure, including railways, roads, and irrigation systems

 

His governance was marked by discipline, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to public welfare.

 

Honors and Recognition

 

For his immense contribution to the nation, Sir Visvesvaraya was knighted as a Knight Commander of the British Indian Empire (KCIE) in 1915. He was also awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor, in 1955.

His birthday, 15th September, is celebrated every year as Engineer's Day in India, in recognition of his lasting impact on the field of engineering.

Legacy

Sir M. Visvesvaraya passed away on 14th April 1962, at the age of 100. His life remains a shining example of how dedication, intellect, and ethical leadership can bring about transformative change.

He is remembered not only for his engineering genius but also for his nation-first attitude and belief in the power of education, innovation, and hard work. Institutions, scholarships, and awards named in his honor continue to inspire young minds across India.
